As per Laurie Carr, Rangers prospect defenseman Mikhail Pashnin has re-signed with CSKA Moscow of the KHL and will continue to play in Russia for the next two years. Pashnin, 22, was rumored to be coming over to North America a few weeks ago as we he was expected to contend for a roster spot in Rangers training camp this September. This signing, of course, refuters those reports.
Considering the defensive depth the Rangers have both in the system and already on the club, Pashnin would have had a very difficult time making the club out of camp this year. That most likely was the main contributor to his decision to re-sign in Russia where he knows he will get guaranteed playing time.
The Rangers cannot be guaranteeing roster spots to anyone right now because there simply is too much competition within the organization. For the Rangers, that's a good thing. For Pashnin, however, it put him in a very difficult position. If I were him, I probably would've made the same decision though - he didn't have much of a choice if he wants to play.
