Around the NHL: Brendan Shanahan Officially Retires

It has been confirmed that former Ranger Brendan Shanahan has officially decided to hang up the skates and retire from the National Hockey League. Within his 21-year career, Shanahan played with five different clubs in the Hartford Whalers, St. Louis Blues, Detroit Red Wings, New Jersey Devils and obviously the Rangers. His tremendous accomplishments include 656 goals, 698 assists, 3 Stanley Cups, and an Olympic Gold Medal. In my eyes, Shanny is a sure Hall of Famer, and will most likely receive recognition from the Detroit Red Wings where the heart of his career was spent as well.

Shanahan's time in the NHL is far from over, however, as I truly feel that he can play a big part in bringing the NHLPA back into order and straightening them out. Right now, they need a powerful voice in there and Shanny is the perfect fit--in my opinion anyway. The lockout may have lasted much longer than just one season if it were not for the efforts of Shanahan and others. But for now, he will be missed all over the league, including myself, as he was one of my personal all-time favorites.
