Monument Dedicated to Cherepanov

Beyond the Blueshirts posted up an article from Omsk today, in which it described the memorial and monument presentation for former Rangers Prospect, Alexei Cherepanov yesterday. Cherepanov passed away last October during an Avangard Omsk game, and now a monument marks the skilled youngster's final resting place.

All of Alexei's teammates, friends, family, and fans attended the memorial, and all placed roses on top of the granite base that now holds the bronze life-size statue of Cherepanov. Yes, it was a very depressing event, but it is also nice to see that such a great monument will forever mark his grave and most of all, remember him.

Follow this link to see more pictures from the memorial, and if you look through them closely, you will even see that former Ranger Captain, Jaromir Jagr was in attendance as well.

Last month I reported that the case was being re-opened by Russian officials, but no news has been released on the matter since then. (Click for article)

Wow! That is some monument!

It is such a shame that no one will ever know what this kid could have done in the NHL. With his production being better than some of the greatest Russian players at the same age.
Don't get me wrong, I understand this is an even bigger loss as far as those who were close to him are concerned, but I could not help but be selfish here and think "what if". Was he going to be the Rangers franchise player that so many thought he would be? And if he had left to play here would he still be alive? Would the AHL or NHL have been better equipt to deal with him when he first fell over?

Yea, a lof of "if's or "what could have beens" ran through my head when I heard of this as well. We really could have had a solid offensive core of prospects with Cherepanov, Grachev, and Anisimov.

It was unfortunate what happen to Alexei, and I wish all of his friends and family the best!
