New Poll/ Kyle McLaren Invited to Rangers Camp

As promised, here is the new poll for the month of September. In the June Poll, I asked which prospects do you think will make the Rangers team, but now it is pretty much a lock that Artem Anisimov makes the team as third line center, as Gordie Clark has come out and said himself. Now the question is who will make the defensive cut and be placed on the Blueshirt Blueline this season? So I decided to leave it up to you, the fans, and place you in Sather's seat to make the decision of which prospects actually make the team. Now I know camp has not began yet, and neither has preseason, but as of now, who do you think should make the cut? So head over to the sidebar and cast your vote, just as the readers have done so greatly in past months.

Here are your options:

Bobby Sanguinetti
Matt Gilroy
Mike Del Zotto
Ilkka Heikkinen
Other

Personally, I feel that Gilroy will be in the lineup for sure, and the others are up in the air, but I will go with Sanguinetti. Some people's votes, however, may change to "other", which leads me to my next topic.

It came out today that the Rangers have elected to allow 32 year-old defensemen, Kyle McLaren a tryout with the team this September. The 6-4, 235 pound defensman has played 12 seaons in the NHL (7 with Bruins, 5 with Sharks) and has consistently put up third pairing numbers in that span. Last season, McLaren failed to make the San Jose cut, therefore played in the AHL with the Worchester Sharks. San Jose did have a pretty stacked defense, though, so keep that in mind.

Whether the Rangers are looking for a seventh defensemen, or they feel they need another veteran on the back-end, this tryout will not hurt us, only help, and if things do not work out, we just part ways with Kyle, and have nothing to do with him. It is worth a try.

What happened to the Bouillon rumor?

Gilroy's spot to lose. Yesterday I would have said - if they keep 7 d-men, the other 2 come from Sauer/Potter/Sanguinetti.

With McLaren thrown into the mix, and if he's healthy and shows "the goods", he'll have to be added to that group.

Yea, that rumor just sort of vanished. I would have liked for it to avtually get done, but it just never did. It was very weird.

In reply to dbmaven:

I agree. Gilroy basically has that spot as well, so it would come down to the players you listed, maybe with the addition of Del Zotto, but I do not feel he is quite ready yet.

I agree with both of you...I thk Gilroy for sure, then I have Potter ahead of Sauer ( Hurt by injuries/Concussion ) and Sanguinetti needs 1 more AHL season, DZ needs an AHL season first at least before a call up I thk...

I'd love to see a healthy McLaren paired with Gilroy on the 3rd Pairing...frees Gilroy to play the his game and McLaren to play his....

Yes, good point, Chris. McLaren is more of a stay at home d-man, therefore allowing Gilroy to pinch and play offense and not worrying about getting caught. So it would be a great pairing IF McLaren works out.

I don't understand the logic. Del Zotto and Sangunetti both need AHL seasoning but Gilroy doesn't? I have Potter ahead of all 3 of them on the NYR defense depth chart. Plus if Potter doesn't make the team chances are he will be lost via waivers.

Well, Gilroy is a bit older, and has a lot of experience from playing college hockey with Boston, so the Rangers will want to get him in a.s.a.p.

Potter was solid last season when he played on the NHL roster, but his potential probably limits him to a third pairing defensemen, where DZ and Sangs could be a first or second.

That is basically the logic in a nut shell. But I do feel that it may be too early to bring up Del Zotto just yet, but we will see. This is what camp is for.

Said, "Hi" to Kyle this morning here in SJ... thought he might get a look, seeing as the Sharks just moved Ehrhoff and Luko to clear some cap room.

Remember too, it wasn't just that McLaren didn't make the Sharks last year because he wasn't good enough, it's that the Sharks were up against the cap and could more easily fit Semenov (@$650k) and Lukowich (@$1.2M) into the 23.

Oh, that is something I was not even aware of. Thank you for the heads up!

I am assuming you are a Sharks fan?

What the hell happened to the Rangers interest in Anton Babchuk? I'd like to see them make room for him. Just as I am curious as to why the Bruins are making no effort to keep Kessel or make room for him on their team, I also wonder why the Hurricanes have seemingly no interest in retaining Babchuk.

Oh and I think Gilroy is a lock. Word is he is more than ready.

Yea, the Babchuk rumor just disappeared, just like the Bouillon one. Wither one of those players would have been nice additions.

And yes, the Bruins are caught in a tough situation and have to make a move if they want to keep Kessel. I bet something happens with that situation in the next week or so.
